Biography

Emin Barın was born in Istanbul in 1913. He was the son of Hafız Mehmet Tevfik Efendi, a calligrapher, illuminator, and bookbinder. He graduated from the Istanbul Teacher Training School in 1932 and from the Painting and Crafts Department of the Ankara Gazi Education Institute in 1936. After a six-month internship at the National Education Printing House, he took lessons in calligraphy from Kamil Akdik and in classical Turkish bookbinding from Necmettin Okyay at the Turkish Decorative Arts Department of the Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts. In 1937, he worked for a year at Professor Dorfner's Private School of Art Bookbinding in Weimar, Germany. In 1938, he took lessons on writing and bookbinding from Professor Thiemann and Professor Spemann at the Bookmaking and Printing Academy in Leipzig. He returned to Istanbul in 1943 and joined the teaching staff of the Decorative Arts Department of the Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts. In 1955, he founded the Calligraphy and Bookbinding Workshop within the Decorative Arts Department of the same institution. Between 1980 and 1984, he worked on printmaking at Süleyman Saim Tekcan's workshop in Söğütlüçeşme. He completed the work he began in this workshop at the Çamlıca Art House. He passed away in Istanbul in 1987.
